Have you ever wondered who these internet trolls are? Probably just jerks right? Well I met my first one the other day! I am lucky I guess that it has taken so long. But the troll intrigued me. How could someone be so negative and cranky? The world to me is so full of possibilities why would someone go out of their way to harass someone else in a seemingly meaningless way? These are all the questions the trolls comment invoked in me. So the Nancy Drew in me took over.
Through afterschool specials I have learned the idea that when someone is a bully, they do it because maybe they were bullied- so it is a learned response. OR they did it before and got attention, but may have done positive commenting and received no attention. So the troll wants attention-then we don’t give the troll attention, it goes away. Easy and it works. I agree. BUT since I watched the LEGO movie, I have started to look more closely at my enemies.
The message from The Lego Movie is a simple one. Lord Business (the evil dude) really just needed a friend after feeling left out, and it was up to Emmet to be the Hero and offer him that friendship. Anyone can be a positive influence. Sometimes people have never had a positive influence in their lives. I think that is so sad , because I never even thought about that as an option. I had the MOST positive power in my Dad. He taught me that you can do anything you want, you can be anything you want, and I have gone on to do just that. I sometimes forget that not everyone has had a Joe Audibert standing behind them telling them that they can no matter what!
If a ‘good’ force tried to destroy all ‘evil’ indiscriminately, it would itself become a force of evil. Why not see what the person behind the trolling actions is all about. I did this through questioning. Maybe this person has never been heard. Be sincere and even if the troll does not want to come out from under their bridge yet, offer them an open invitation. Lets promote a kinder internet and lead by example. I agree in not rewarding bad behavior, but how can we promote better communication? Lead by example.
Try it out as an experiment. If nothing else, you will get a lot of practice in debating, patience, communicating, and being a positive influence (I don’t know that you can change a troll in one conversation). The practice for me was great, there were many times I wanted to resort to name calling as well, but each time I learned it is not necessary, and I feel really good for trying to be like Lego Emmet and expand my acceptance. I think it surprised my troll a lot. So that was funny.
Did I change the trolls mind, probably not but I did make him think, and that is a step in the right direction. I also was able to practice dealing with confrontation. I hope that in a real life confrontational situation I will be able to be calm, and a good way to know is by practicing. You could do it anonymously too, why not? That sounds fun as well! Good Luck!
